Travelling The Leicester Line & Old Grand Union

Four cavernous tunnels, three spectacular lock flights and the site of the ingenious Foxton inclined plane are just some of the memorable engineering features on this route through rural Leicestershire.  Some consider this canal's long summit pound, rich in wildlife, to be one of the most beautiful lengths of artificial waterway in Britain.

Exaactly which part of the route your trip takes will depend on your physical ability / willingness to do locks, and the water situation. I decide the route once I talk with you on the first day. Occassionally we are constrained by lock closure or navigation impediments such as trees blocking the canal. However, I always try to go down Foxton Locks if it is at all possible as they are an amazing experience and are assisted (if necessary) by a horde of volunteers.
